THE REGIONS

The regions were set up as self-governing components of the state by Law 129/2000 on the Regions, which came into force on the 1st of January 2001.On that day, 13 regions and one special Prague urban region came into existence

Královéhradecký region consists of five constituent districts of Hradec Králové, Jičín, Náchod, Rychnov nad Kněžnou and Trutnov. Thanks to its geographical position this region is a part of three different traditional tourist areas of national beauty and historic interest.

The most westerly and the smallest, but one of the best-known areas is part of the tourist region known as Český ráj (the Bohemian Paradise). The Krkonoše Mountains with their National Park and the highest Czech mountain Sněžka are among the most popular recreational areas in the country. The largest proportion of the region is part of the tourist area "Eastern Bohemia". It includes the regional capital city Hradec Králové with its outstanding tradition of urban architecture associated with the famous Czech architects Josef Gočár and Jan Kotěra.

The region is very distinctive for its variety. After all, it stretches from Podzvičín to the Jičín area, the Adršpach and Teplice Rocks - the largest national natural reserve in the Czech Republic, the Broumov Walls and then over the Orlické Mountains and Orlice nature park right down to the fertile plains of the Labe basin. The whole region is also full of monuments, especially of the Renaissance and Baroque eras. It boasts Kuks with its sculptures and Braun´s Nativity, the Chateaux of Opočno, Doudleby nad Orlicí, Náchod, Rychnov nad Kněžnou, Častolovice, and Karlova Koruna in Chlumec nad Cidlinou, Hrádek u Nechanic, Ratibořice and the Babiččino údolí.

The rich cultural legacy of the region and respect for history and nature is embodied not only in the numbers of monuments and protected areas (such as the Třebechovice Nativity Scene) but also in the living present in the form of the famous zoo in Dvůr Králové nad Labem, and the many folk and cultural festivals (for example Rock for People).

Recently, the range of possibilities for active leisure and holidays has been increasing (cyclo touring, aqua centres and horse riding).
